Query letters suck so much! And I really think part of the reason they suck, is because we as writers are too close to the work to boil it down easily and efficiently to 300 words or less. We've spent months weaving this story in 70-100K words, characters, plots, and subplots, and then we have to sit down, ignore all of that, pull out the "main conflict" and give it enough coherency to hang on in a paragraph or two.

Things like how you removed the second "derelict" just didn't occur to me - because I thought I had to tell people the ship wasn't really derelict. Too close to the events I'm describing, I think.
