Writing Pimpage
Oct. 7th, 2004 12:48 pmNaNoWriMo -- Though I am currently without a computer, I'm interested in chatting with other folks participating in this pre-November. What I'm envisioning is not just helping and supporting with the actual writing next month, but also brainstorming, helping, supporting, etc this month, during the idea crafting, character building, and outlining process. So I'm going to go ahead and set up my writing LJ and go from there. I'll post the link here either later today or tomorrow.
Writer's Weekend -- This is an international conference for writers of genre fiction. (ie, romance, SF/F, mystery, etc) Like other conferences, the idea is people who are serious about writing, be they published or not, pay a fee to attend (in this case the fee covers your food, too), and they get to go and rub elbows with professionals in their field -- authors, agents, and editors. They attend panels and workshops and learn from said professionals, and then there's the lazy times when you get to just sit around and converse with them about whatever you want. This next year (2005) will be June9th-12th in Seattle, WA. It's limited to 125 people, so it has a very small and casual atmosphere, as opposed to other, similar conferences. I've already mailed off my entry fee ($180 -- you can reserve your spot with a mere $25, so long as you send in the rest of the fee by Jan 31, 2004. Post January, the fee jumps up to $220 if there are still slots available.
Here's the fun part: You can also enter one or more manuscripts into their yearly contest by submitting the first chapter and a synopsis. There is no guarantee of publication, but the top three in each genre receive cash prizes and there are agents and editors attending that may or may not be interested in looking over the winner's work. So, my personal goal? Finish S&S during NaNoWriMo, submit it to the contest, and attend the conference.
Not to mention the fact that both Sherrilyn Kenyon and Jim Butcher are among the guests of honor. I'm so excited!
Question: Is anyone interested in attending with me? I realize Seattle's not as close for some, and also that not all of you are interested in pursuing writing professionally, but if any of you are interested, it would be awesome to have someone to go with, share a room with, etc. (The conference is taking place at a hotel.)
Above all, it feels good to have a plan, to feel like I am, once again, moving forward with my writing. The last year has been difficult for that.
