I am getting sick. My throat is sore and my sinuses are congested. Ugh, about covers how I feel this not-so-wonderful Tuesday morning.

On the other hand, a quickie stop by my local bead store yesterday for some jet swarovskis -- (I am making a cloack clasp for L's babysitter, for the cloak L is making her to go with her prom dress for this Saturday. She's goth, and she's wearing this black velvet dress with these deep purple panels that is classy and gorgeous and still within her personal tastes. Time constraints prevented me from ordering the jet from my usual, cheaper online source.) -- found me two new colors I NEED to do something with. OMG, they are both deep, gorgeous colors that will look fabulous with some jet thrown in. I'm thinking an Evil Queen crown, perhaps.

These pics do NOT the colors justice, but you can sort of get an idea:

Purple Velvet

Ruby Red

The red in particular is actually MUCH more of a black-red, absolutely gorgeous. There is no online pic that does it any kind of justice. The purple is very rich, deep, and I'm using some of them for her clasp, since her dress has a similar color of purple incorporated.

Anyway, I can't decide how to make the crown. Really, the metal I use shouldn't be gold or silver - it should be black. Hmm. Black, with ruby red and jet swarovskis. I wonder what I could get to coat some silver and make it black?

Couldn't you just use some black wire... Sorry, I'm so not up on the whole different types of wire. I just know at the bead store I go to they have a bunch of different coloured copper (I think) wire. Would that work, or are you looking for something more fancy?

Personally, I think you could get away with silver as well... especially if you had a more gunmetal type finish.

I love the colour of those beads. I think I know about the red ones you're talking about, they are stunning. I'm sure whatever you make will be amazing.

I will have to look into that. I've pretty much only used silver/gold fill, esp for freehand wire shaping stuff, but I could use a copper coated black, if it's in the correct gauge and hardness, and the black is sturdy enough not to flake off...time for some research, I think.

But my fallback will definitely be silver. :)

Yes, aren't the red stunning IRL? I wish the camera could capture them better. That pic has too much of a pink undertone, which I don't see in them IRL.

There's always Niobium...

I didn't find any black right off, but there are some v. dark blues and some reds... I bet if you looked you could find some black.

Here's what Fire Mountain had on hand: http://www.firemountaingems.com/Shopping.asp?skw=KWCORDNIOBIUMWIRE

Those stones are gorgeous, I can't wait to see what you do with them!

Ugh, about covers how I feel this not-so-wonderful Tuesday morning.

Me too, and snow is expected. *sigh*

They do have anodized black niobium, but apparently it's the one color which they have problems with the anodization flaking off...of course. Grr.

Of course it does. *sigh* Did you see any good reds or purples?

The other option is to not use the special silver, and then just let it oxidize. Would leave a lovely black color. :)I have a silver ring, that is partially oxidized on purpose to highlight the oak leaves.

I've been considering that, and it's a good idea. I could even MAKE it oxidize with a couple of home methods for getting that black patina....I've never tried it, but I know other wireworkers who have. Hmmm.

Oh, and I didn't even think about using purple or red! But that could be very cool, indeed, if they have the right gauges of wire. *runs off to look through The Ring Lord's stock*
