Roleplay and...bobbles?
Apr. 11th, 2007 09:17 amYikes, you guys have been prolific in the last twelve hours!
So, on a different note entirely, I'm thinking about doing something kind of like writing drabbles, only with jewelry. Where people could leave a couple of "prompts", like "crystals, bracelet" or "blue, pendant" or some such, and I make a pendant just for them that incorporates blue. It could be literally any design I choose - chainmaille, wire wrapping, a single stone, or a bunch of crystals - so they're still going to be surprised by whatever it ends up being. And the catch is, people would have to pay for the materials involved - I couldn't afford to make five jewelry bobbles at $20 in materials apiece, for instance. Which is sort of what I'm thinking. Like, you would leave a bobble prompt and pay for the materials involved, the "cost" being completely up to you depending on how involved you'd like your piece to be, (but i'm thinking a $5-$20-ish range) and I guarantee I'll use at least that amount worth of stuff in the making of your bobble. Or maybe that amount minus $2 for shipping or something...anyway, you get the idea.
Thoughts? Anything to add or suggest? Would anyone be interested in that? These would be pretty simple things - no masks or crowns, LOL - but stuff that would only take me an hour to a couple of hours, tops, to make. It just seems like something fun to me - I donate my time and skill, you get a neat surprise in the mail. :D
I created a D&D character last night. Ok, this might not seem anything special to any of you, even those of you who do roleplay, but I don't create new characters very often. Let's see. The last one was....two years ago? I like to play my characters for a long time. My longest running character still currently being played as a major PC (ie for more than the occasional cameo) was created....let me think...eleven years ago? Something like that.
Anyway. My new character is a red dragon from Krynn. For the purposes of the game, she spends most of her time polymorphed as a young Elven woman. As a hatchling, her entire nest of siblings was wiped out by a group of Solamnic Knights. Their commander - the High Justice, who happens to be married to a silver dragon, and is blessed by Paladine with unnaturally long life - found her and couldn't bring himself to kill her. He brought her home to his wife and they raised Zoliya for the next few centuries. Now she's a 1st level cleric of Mishikal on her first adventure. (Er, this is a high level game, obviously. I'm not the only dragon in the group.) Ladamir (her father) took her to see Paladine as a hatchling and had her blessed, and so Zoliya is chaotic good, but she still has a few red dragon traits - things tend to spontaneously burst into flame around her when she gets angry, she has an unreasoning attachment to jewels and gems, which she wears in her hair and on her belt - what? Who says a cleric has to be poor? And she is at times confident to the point of arrogance. The party she is traveling with is from Faerun, and there are three halfings in the group - at least two of whom remind her uncomfortably of kender. One of them made the mistake of admiring the rubies in her hair too closely, and the corner of his cloak burst into flame. The gold dragon in the group accused her of lying to him, even after he found out who her mother is (the silver dragon, Nija, an Emissary of Mishikal) which has absolutely offended her on their first meeting. She is, however, getting along spectacularly with the near-sighted cleric of Corellon in the group (who is actually the avatar of a much higher level character with a Divine rank of three - I told you this was a high level game - who brought Corellon back from the dead after he was killed in one of our long ago campaigns. So, in this persona she's a 3rd level cleric of Corellon...sort of.)
So far, Zoliya's been a blast to play. She carries the makings for tea on her person at all times, and when she gets impatient she stops and starts the process of brewing a cup so she won't lash out at whatever (or whoever) is the cause. Her dream is to carry a Solamnic Knight into battle one day, but we'll see how that changes as she grows.

Date: 2007-04-11 05:34 pm (UTC)I hope it works out - I've had the worst luck ever in D&D and I am not a "complicated rules" fan. I'm playing a CG Cleric (to eventually be a Divine patron Goddess is Elistree (?) something like that anyway)Unfortunately I got some crappy roles, and so my intelligence and charisma is not where I'd like it. You know better than normal, or in the case of charisma less than normal. I barely know how to build the character...*sigh* I really, really hope this turns out to be fun, because the rules are annoying. I'm still building the character, but am cautious about making shit up since I'm not to familiar with the world at all really.
I'm glad you are having a good time with your new character, though. :)
The bobble idea is an odd one...but it could be interesting.

Date: 2007-04-11 05:51 pm (UTC)I'm not too optimistic for you, unfortunately, given what you've said about the DM and numbers. I hate rigidity in the rules and playing "by the numbers". It stifles creativity, which is what roleplay is all about. But since he likes a good story, maybe I'm wrong...we throw out quite a few of the more extraneous rules in our house - heck, if we played out a combat scene with all the crap the books want, it would take an hour to do two rounds of combat. We like to streamline and simplify.
And I have to say, Divine in 26 sessions??? WOW! It took me something like eight years of playing Sulia before she gained any Divine rank. (Of course, I started her in 2nd edition, where there wasn't any such thing, and Mark can be stingy with experience at times - we once took out three dracoliches and a host of tenari, and I think he gave us something like 3,000 experience each. LOL.)
Er, I don't mean this to put you off anymore than you already might be. Good story is encouraging. :) Also, you should know that every four levels, you get to add a point to any stat you want, so you could raise your intel and charisma.
On the bobbles - I don't know, I just thought it might be fun to create pieces specifically for this person or that, fun things that wouldn't cost much in time or money, you know?

Date: 2007-04-11 07:06 pm (UTC)I'm hoping it will work out it's 3.5 and the DM is very all about the rules. (Like I'll probably be sleeping without a bed, since we only got 200GP to start, and I had to have the long bow. Elves do not use crossbows. Besides, I want to reload easy.)He does like story though, so I'm hoping it works out. And I think he said 26 sessions, and if you are freaking out, then I could be wrong, or we are really, really in for it. And Divine could be the wrong word - it's the prestige class? And I know about the 4 levels, but eeekk. How exactly I'm going to play an elf cleric with less than normal intelligence is quite beyond me.
Bobbles - it would be fun, and it's worth a try. Hell, maybe I'll toss out one. :)

Date: 2007-04-11 11:05 pm (UTC)Okay, if you're game, I'll start. Um... $20 and a pretty spring pendant. gmail me at missus.wing for snail mail address and give me yours so I can send you payment.
Hehe, do you do requests? Like if I were to send you various bits and say "make something, anything, out of this"?
I didn't start in D&D, either.
Date: 2007-04-11 11:49 pm (UTC)... although I did play the Eye of the Beholder trilogy, but I don't think that counts ;)
