*sigh*

We all have favorite Christmas music from our childhood, right?

Mine is this: The Reader's Digest An Old Fashioned Christmas Collection. (Yes, i know the cover is spectacularly cheestastic.) Made available in 1977, it was the Christmas music my family played very year, along with other Lp's of the Vienna Boy's Choir and the Nutcracker, for my entire childhood. My sister still has the records (as the only one in the family with an LP player these days.) They aren't in the best condition anymore, after years of being played.

I want them on mp3, so I can have a playlist of all my old favorites. I'd love to gift my Mom with a copy burned to CD. But jeez, it seems that over half the music on there doesn't exist anywhere anymore. It's depressing. And disappointing. Even the Fireside Singers Twelve Days of Christmas mp3 I found does not match the version I remember quite clearly from the album. I think the Bing Crosby is one of the few things I can actually find.

It's extremely disappointing.

i bought GeekBoy the ion turntable which plays LPs and converts them to mp3s. he did a bunch of his mom's old Joni Mitchell albums this September and is planning on converting more for her Zune as a Xmas present. if there are more albums than that one that you'd like on your player, i'd recommend the ion as an investment. (we have the Duchess' record collection, which is about seven huge boxes worth, as well as my collection of vintage belly dance records (talk about cheezy covers!) eventually it will all be converted.)

my childhood Christmas albums are The Partridge Family Christmas Card and a vintage one of Polish carols that my parents bought their first year together and was made of green vinyl. both are on my Zune. (-: i have added to that A Time of Peace (traditional carols done on ME instruments) and The Little Dublin Singers (GeekBoy's childhood memory album).

It's just that one set, and I'm pretty sure my sister's old turntable doesn't convert things, but what an amazing toy!

Well, it's a box set of six records, but I'd totally be willing to offer something in trade (jewelry perhaps?) if he would be willing to convert them for me....I had hoped to gift my Mom with CD versions of them for Christmas this year, but I totally understand if that's too strict a deadline...if he'd even be willing to convert them. Six records is a lot, I'm guessing.

lemme talk to GeekBoy about how long it would take. probably not long at all. if i remember correctly, it's just a matter of playing the records and fiddling with settings and stuff. six records isn't much.

Do you know anybody who could transfer the LP to mp3 for you? I can do it, but of course you'd have to mail it to me!

I may take you up on that...you and xlana are the only two people I know currently with the capability. :) If I had more records to do this to, I'd just buy my own LP to mp3 converter, but I don't, so $100 seems like a lot for one boxed set.
