Opened up my f-list this morning to widespread anger, panic, and woe. It seems LJ has laid off some employees, quite a few, with no notice, nor any severance.

This seems...unfortunately in keeping with what is happening across the board with companies in today's economic climate. So I'm not panicking yet. Also, this was posted on LJ's twitter:

LJers! Don't worry, the news of our demise is premature.Yes, there were layoffs, but that does not affect your LJ!

Which seems to support the whole harsh economic times = unfortunate layoffs. A lot of companies are doing the same thing. I might be more sympathetic to the "no notice, and no severance" thing, but I also have to say that pretty much every job everywhere has the right to terminate employment without notice or any kind of goodbye money - I know mine does. Severance packages are something people should count themselves very, very fortunate to get, not a requirement of being laid off. Not saying they shouldn't be a requirement, mind.

In any case, I am not panicking. I have a permanent account, and I certainly hope LJ does not fold anytime, well, EVER, but if it does, I'll go wherever all of you do. :D

Eeep!

I'm not holding my breath for LJ to fold... but it would definitely be a serious bummer. I know, back in the LJ Blackout of 2005, lots of people sighed up over at GJ in case it happened again... but I would be so bummed to lose touch with so many of my friends were that to happen!! :-/

(Nevermind, all the across the board people getting laid off is a total, total bummer, in general.)

Anyone know a good way to back up these?

If you use a mac, I wholeheartedly recommend this. It's very easy to use and saves a copy of your LJ onto your desktop. (If you are new to terminal, scrawl down to the comments and there is a step-by-step direction on how to use terminal.)

Sadly I'm a Windows girl. Thanks though!

LJ Archive is what I've used in the past. Haven't used it in...a long time, but I remember it being pretty easy!

I feel exactly the same way. I saw the news and wasn't much surprised by it as it really is happening everywhere.

And, I really hope all of this works out and LJ (plus lj-people) stick around cause I just bought a permanent account myself and it would really suck to have to move elsewhere when I just made a lifetime commitment.
