Personality!
Jun. 18th, 2008 09:49 amInteresting! So, I filled out that Myers-Briggs Personality Type Test. If you've taken it, you probably know more about it than I do. If you haven't, maybe you're interested (which is why I've provided the link above).
Turns out, I am INFP - Introverted iNtuitive Feeling Perceiving
I went into this somewhat skeptically. Not that I don't believe in personality types, but more that I'm not so sure answering 70 or 100 questions can accurately pinpoint one's type. And then I took it - I am forced to admit that as a general "type" it is...rather shockingly accurate. Oh, I objected once or twice as I was reading, because I'm not sure I could feel pity, for say, a proven/admitted serial killer's execution, and apparently I am strongly Feeling and thus expected to empathize with literally everyone. But then I think about all the times my husband has commented on my "soft heart" and it becomes difficult to argue, even to myself.
Of course, it was also hard to argue with the whole "imaginative childhood" and "strong sense of right and wrong" and that even though we INFP's are very deep feeling, we apparently also have a "deep seated reserve". (It may not seem like it online, but almost everyone I know IRL comments at some point in our relationship about how reserved they found me when we first met.) But the part that sold me the most was this:
...they have a gift for interpreting stories, as well as for creating them, and thus often write in lyric, poetic fashion. I have had to fight and fight lyric and poetic to keep it from overtaking my writing style and making it far too flowery. On the other hand, crafting a beautiful line is still my favorite part of writing - though it's worth a mention that I do not write poetry, nor do I ever expect to. And then this: ...it combines as auxiliary with introverted Feeling and gives rise to unusual skill in both character development and fluency with language--a sound basis for the development of literary facility.
So, apparently it comes as no surprise for someone of my personality type to turn to writing. Heh. Maybe there's something to this test after all.
And finally, a poll, if you choose to answer - because I'm mighty curious to see all the types that might be in fandom and writing circles:
ETA: Feel free to comment, if you like, as to whether or not you feel your PT is accurate, and why or why not!
( What's your four letter code? )
