Jun. 15th, 2005 01:25 pmSo it seems the numbers for Mr. and Mrs. Smith are much higher than anyone expected of an "action movie", and according to their demographic, a great chunk of those numbers belong to over-25 women, which is also a shock for an "action movie", so they're attributing this success to the free publicity and steamy gossip of the tabloids on the lives of Mr. Pitt and Ms. Jolie.
Give me a break. I swear whoever comes up with this crap must live in a steril little box cut off from the rest of the world. I'll tell you why a bunch of over-25-year-old women are going to see this movie:
1. It is not simply an "action movie". As Roger Ebert put it, it is one of those big star romances where the two co-stars have amazing chemistry, but they just happen to be playing assassins, hence the action backdrop. It's a romance, people. With two super-hot stars. Which brings me to my next point:
2. Duh. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Of all the actresses ever to reign in Hollywood, Angelina is the one about whom women most often say "If I were ever tempted to try a lesbian experience, Angelina Jolie would be it." And it has Brad Pitt, only one of the sexiest, best looking leading men of our generation. This isn't rocket science.
3. When is Hollywood going to realize that women are drawn to kick butt female characters? Has the success of Buffy and Alias gone completely unnoticed? Mrs. Smith kicks ass, pure and simple, and she looks good doing it. Of course we want to see it.
Um, yeah. That about covers it.
Can you tell what my newest obssession is?

Date: 2005-06-16 06:50 am (UTC)And bottom line: a good, fun, summer movie is just that. If Hollywood makes it, people will come and pay the ticket prices. Has it occured to them that other films' lack of success is due to the fact that they're crap?
