Cinderella Man
Jun. 20th, 2005 10:25 amFor Father's Day we went and saw Cinderella Man. An excellent movie, that is unfortunately not doing as well at the box office as it deserves to. Unlike so many other movies this summer -- Star Wars, Batman Begins, Mr. and Mrs. Smith -- movies which I liked, mind you, Cinderella Man isn't a big Hollywood, splashy, gimmicky movie that everyone and their brother rushes to see. Which is somewhat surprising given the fact that it's a Ron Howard movie, and thus should have a built in audience just for that. Instead, it is kind of a quiet movie. A drama about the real life story of one family's survival through the Depression. And it's a good movie. One of those where you leave the theater feeling fulfilled and happy. You know the kind I mean? There are some movies you watch, and when you're done you're excited and ready to go watch it again right that second. Cinderella Man isn't one of those. It's the "Wow, that was just a damn fine film, and I think I'll rec it to everyone I know," variety. It also has "Best Picture Qualifier" written all over it, and I certainly hope it is remembered when the time comes, despite the recent bad Russell Crowe publicity associated with it.
