Sometimes the stupidest things sound like really smart ideas at the time. Like staying up really late the night before I have to get up at 4:30am to drive to the airport and pick up my husband.

Why, you ask, did this ever sound like a good idea? Um, because he's running on Japan time and I thought if I were just as tired as he is, we could take a nap together and be on kind of the same schedule today.

Yeah, whatever. Stupid, idiotic, really dumb idea. Because driving an hour and a half at 5 in the morning on exactly 2.5 hours of sleep is not smart. Not even with a beautifully homemade cup of espresso to keep me warm and awake. The hour and a half drive back home sapped whatever energy I might have had left, but instead of taking a nap with Mark, I find myself to tired to sleep. Too tired to watch TV. Too tired to read, write, or play video games. I'm just too damn tired for anything requiring moderately cohesive thought. And I have no one to blame but myself.

*sigh*

On the other hand, did some kick ass background roleplay for a new character last night. Um...for an RPG my friend L is going to run especially for me on my birthday. I get to play a race L created that's designed to kill Gods. That's their job, taking care of any Gods who whack up the balance of things or break the rules. Background in this case means childhood/teen years. Her character flaws include the traits Fearless and Quick Temper. Pretty much the worst mix of disadvantages ever when playing a character who mucks about in the doings of selfish, vain, and manipulative deities. I rolled them randomly, lucky me. Thanks in part to this dastardly combination, so far in her not-so-illustrious fourteen years, Nessa has managed to:

1. unwittingly enslave herself to a very dangerous God - she didn't know he was a God at the time, and really, she just thought he was forging her a really cool weapon that could never be forcibly taken away from her. Um, oops.

2. challenged a demon to an arena fight ala Rome. She lost, damn it. And promptly challenged another demon to another fight, which she also lost. But she came close to winning both times, and both fighters were much more experienced than she. Unfortunately, she didn't realize the drink they goaded her into sharing after the fight was something more than alcohol, which led to:

3. accidentally tempting the God of Passion into an unwise liaison, which nearly a)lost Nessa her virginity, and b)the God of Passion his life. Because Nessa's father found out, arrived with her two Uncles just in time to save Nessa and kill the God of Passion. Nessa pleaded with her father not to kill him - after all, she drank the wine that caused all the trouble to begin with. He ended up sparing the God's life after extricating an unbreakable vow not to speak, touch, or otherwise come near Nessa for at least four years (her 18th birthday), on pain of utter destruction. He then lectured his daughter on the dangers of getting involved with Gods, especially given what she is. (Nevermind that he himself is married to the Goddess of War, Nessa's mother. But hey, what are parents for, if not double standards?)

4. not done yet with her fearless and often not-well-thought-out activities for the day, Nessa proceeds to get herself cursed by an object designed to curse Gods. She now has a list of 30 Impossible Things she must accomplish in five years' time, else be utterly destroyed.

Yep, all in a day's work. And this is just the background material. I hate to think what mayhem she's going to get into in the actual game.

ETA: Mark's B-day gift went over extremely well, as you might imagine. Though he had guessed it ahead of time, damn it. He always manages to figure it out without me dropping any verbal hints. I've come to the conclusion that I must think about these things too loudly, and he just picks it up from the air or something. Seriously, it's uncanny.

In any case, he was so excited he had to load SW: Empire at War right then and there, even though he was running on 26 hours with no sleep at that point. He installed the game, loaded a campaign just to see how it ran/looked, then shut the computer down because his eyes couldn't focus very well, go figure. I think I've earned myself some cool points or something in the spousal gift department. :)

Oh! Yes, the birthday present. :D Went over spectacularly. I'll edit the post above to add a bit about that.
