Someone will know the answer to this, I have no doubt whatsoever:  Where does one go to find chinese translations for writing Firefly fic?  There must be a source somewhere for the more common phrases and insults. 

Right now I have things like [sister] and [Inara insults Mal] all over the place.  Er...help?

How could one not look up chinese words when writing Firefly fic?

I am now having visions of either a) fic written without the use of chinese at all, which wouldn't ring true to the 'verse, and even worse b) people randomly throwing in words they 'remember' from watching the series without bothering to look up correct spelling or meaning...I don't have much good to say about either possibility.

Well, I confess to a combination of both A and B, actually ;) In the short ones I've done I haven't bothered with the Chinese bits, and in the long one I'm working on now I've so far gotten away with ones I know are correct, like 'mei mei' or 'bao bei'...there are one or two other ones that I'll have to get off my ass and look up, though. *is lazy*

LOL! Well, using 'mei mei' and 'bao bei' from memory is a little different than trying to, say, use one of the longer insults that you can't even make out the proper pronunciation of w/repeated listenings on the DVD.

And I waited until I was pretty much done before bothering to look anything up, either.

Oh, and I am hoping if I send you the fic tonight, you'd be able to give it a quick beta before posting? If you don't have time, no problem, I'll post an emergency plea to LJ at large and see who could do a quick turnaround. :)

Yep, I can beta. I'm good tonight up until about 11pm Toronto time, but then I'm pretty much out of commission tomorrow, so if I don't get to it tonight it'd have to wait until Friday night.

Damn, that's 8pm my time, and unfortunately dinner/the husband have eaten up my time. I don't think I'll get it to you before then, but I'll send it anyway (when it is done) and do a req for another beta, too. That way, if it gets beta'd it could go up tomorrow, but you could still read it whenever you get the chance. *fingers crossed*
