It's that fandom season again
Sep. 14th, 2006 10:16 amFinally, the Fall season is getting ready to start in full force. I know we've had new shows already, and some old shows return with new eps, a smattering here and there, but by the end of the month, we'll have our entire 2006 Season up and running (with the exception of a couple of late bloomers in October).
I am excited. I re-watched the finale of Criminal Minds last night, and then CSI:NY, which last season overtook the regular show as my favorite CSI to watch. The aesthetic changes they made last season with the show's mood and lighting really, really helped it overcome the issues it had in S1. And then the little delvings into character's personal lives added that touch of draw-the-viewer-in. Compared to the CSI, it rocked. Miami has never really risen above it's pretentious beginnings, so I have little to comment on there.
However, I did spend my morning searching out spoilers and interviews with the cast of NY, hoping to discover whether the trend of last season was likely to continue this season, and the answer to that is, yes. I have an actual 'ship on a CSI show! A canon ship! (One could argue Grissom/Sara for the original, but really, don't get me started on how the writers handled that.) Danny/Lindsey so, so rocks! Every episode last season from a couple past the intro of her character had some little byplay between them. Some little, thirty second to two minute interaction that was fun and flirty, and made my shipper heart happy. By all reports, that's going to continue this season, along with personal development for other characters as well. Yay!
Which satisfies the same place in my show watching habits as Without a Trace, which I love, but there are a few things I'd like to see fixed. First, Jack got a little less selfish and condescending last season, but I hope they continue the trend of lessening his attitude, cause there have been times when I really just hate him. Next, they better expand on this mysterious history between Danny and Elena. I read some spoiler last season where the writers originally intended her to have dated his partner (from before he came to Jack's team, obviously) in the past, and Danny never agreed or blamed her for something that happened with his partner, or something. I have to tell you, that is so not the vibe I was getting. I read that and just went "um...hmm...what??", cause Danny never seemed to hold anything against Elena. If anything, Elena has been the one that's given him the cold shoulder and held him at a distance, while Danny has done his best to let her, even though he clearly cares about her and was giddy as a schoolboy with a first crush when she first showed up. So, here's hoping the writers have scrapped that ridiculous backstory in favor of a more realistic one. (I know what my backstory for them is! Heh.) And then, I have to wonder if the writers intend to do anything at all with Martin/Sam, or if they're going to continue pretending they never wrote a storyline in which the two of them got together. I mean, if it didn't work out, tell us that! Or were we just supposed to extrapolate from the very lame Martin-addicted-to-painkillers arc last season? Give me a break.
This all might make it sound like I don't enjoy the show, but I really, really do. There are times when I love it. And then the writers inevitably do something evil with whatever I loved, and I hate them for it.
Possibly my most anticipated show of the Fall season (other than BSG) is NCIS. I adore this show, I mean really, really love it. The characters just rock, and they manage to weave mysteries to be solved each week with actual character development so seamlessly, and so much more successfully than any of the CSI dramas have done. I've seen the promo for the new season, and I am so excited! It made me want to hug Tony, and Gibbs, and Abby, and pretty much everyone. The blend of drama and humor and angst on this show is so perfect, I don't understand why it's not the most popular show of its genre. It totally should be.
Bones has already started back up, of course, and is proving its potential of last season. This show had a rocky start, but improved by leaps and bounds last year, until I found myself thinking with some amazement "Wow...that episode was actually really good. Did they get new writers?" Now it seems consistently good, which is nice. I love the interplay between Angela and Hodgins, it's so sweet and perfect! The girl who couldn't settle for just one guy falling for the science geek with the ego. And last night how they both got uncomfortable with the "L" word, but are so clearly falling for each other! *sigh* I love it. And they've made the UST between Brennan and Boothe more subtle, less hit-you-over-the-head-w/a-hammer, and so I can buy into it better. These characters are all kind of goofy enough in their own ways, yet also serious enough, that if this keeps up, Bones just might end up with the same ultimate combination of drama, funny, and angst that NCIS has. And that would be perfect. :)
Words cannot express my excitement for BSG. I know most of my f-list disagrees, but I really loved the finale last season. Once we got over the shock, Mark and I were both just "Wow - that's brilliant!" about it. I cannot wait to see what they do with this next. I don't want to be spoiled, so if you know, don't tell me.
My only quibble is, I really hope Lee is not still fat. Cause yeah, I'm shallow and I want my hunky male lead characters to stay hunky! I can admire Helo in Lee's stead, but I want my towel!Lee back!
Other than that, I am prepared to be amazed and awed by the new season. :)
I think that hits on most of my shows. I look forward to seeing my f-list peppered with lj-cuts to hide spoilery thoughts once more, and watch the number of posts with new fic or icons jump up considerably. Yay Fall!

Date: 2006-09-14 06:17 pm (UTC)Blech, yeah. I'm not a Sara fan either, so the whole ship is a bit 'bleh' for me.
Danny/Lindsey so, so rocks!
They really are adorable. I didn't know anything about them until I heard
I know what my backstory for them is! Heh.
Do share. :D (I find Enrique Murciano and Roselyn Sanchez incredibly appealing together.)
I'm so glad tv is back in full swing.

Date: 2006-09-14 06:59 pm (UTC)I rather like that she had a relationship with his partner, maybe that's even the father of her child, but then he was killed tragically on the job. Of course, neither of them would rest until his killer was caught. A year or more goes by before this finally happens, and when it does, it's an intense and angst filled case. That night, they go out for a beer together to toast Danny's dead partner/Elena's dead husband-lover, and end up in bed together. It's intense and passionate, but Elena thinks it is a huge mistake - she can't allow herself to get involved with another cop, ever. So the next morning she shrugs it off as comfort sex, thanks him, and politely invites him out of her life.
Danny is a little baffled at her behavior, and his temper gets away from him (as it so often does), and carries him right out the door and out of her life. He'd already put his application in to the FBI months ago. When he gets the news that same day that he's been accepted, he figures it's serendipity and leaves without saying good-bye.
