Oh, and Friday night I did see

Why, oh, why, could James Franco not have been cast as Anakin Skywalker?  He has an intensity that HD just....doesn't.  Ok, I liked RofS, I really did.  And the final battle between Anakin and Obi-Wan, but James Franco in that role would have been fantastic.

Obviously there are parallels between SW and this movie for that exact reason - former 'brothers' who end up trying to kill each other.  Which I enjoyed in this, except for one thing, really: WHY KILL HARRY???  That is so cliched, Raimi!  I know it's part of the Heroic Cycle, I was once an English major - how else does a villain redeem himself, after all, other than by saving the good guy's ass in the end and then dying, right?  Well, pffft.  (Come on Hollywood - try something different!)  Harry should have lived, then had plastic surgery to fix his face (because come on, the man had more money than God.  Easily done.  And from a completely shallow perspective, Harry's face should not be horrible scarred, though I'm sure if he'd lived, the scar would have served as his penance for being evil, once.  Whatever.)

So, clearly, I like Harry.  Is anyone who really knows me surprised?  Didn't think so.

Other reactions:

This movie - though fun and entertaining, and not nearly the travesty that was X3 - was nowhere near as good as the previous two.  Too many storylines, not enough character development (natural character development, not plot-convenient-character-whatever).  Is Kirsten Dunst tired of hanging around screaming all the time, yet?  I would think so.  Why does the villain have to take MJ in every single movie, and since it does happen frequently, the girl should have started carrying mace and taking judo by now.  Just sayin'.

Don't get me wrong.  Spidey 3 was fun.  I enjoyed it.  But it was hard not to burst out laughing that Evil!Peter is even more dorky than Good!Peter, a fact not helped by the floppy hair styled into his eyes, or the black eyeliner and clothing Raimi seemed to think would make him look 'evil'.  Also, at the beginning of the movie Peter seemed to have morphed into a selfish jerk puffed up on his own success, whilst MJ had somehow become a singer on Broadway, yet when she was fired from this, she had nothing more to fall back on than singing in a jazz bar.  Um, I'm fairly certain that once an actor/actress gets as far as Broadway, they've experienced some other successes in their career.  Again, just sayin'.  I don't think Raimi actually likes MJ's character, other than as an avenue for the villain to get to Spidey.

But again, I did enjoy the movie, even though it sounds like I didn't.

Oh, and I don't understand why Raimi had such a problem with Danny Elfman, considering that every major scene in the movie used the themes Elfman wrote.  All Christopher Young did was score a few in between bits, and not many.  Hope he didn't get paid much.  (And Young is actually a good composer.  I like his work.)

And see this is an objection everyone seems to have that I kinda don't get. You see because the symbiote enhances the natural attributes of its host THUS MAKING PETER EVEN DORKIER. But also evil.

But seriously (though I was already kinda serious...ER) I felt that the entire emo hair, black clothes thing was intentionally self-mocking? As indicated by Peter walking down the street like a hilarious dork and people giving him even more hilarious WTF?! looks.

You make an excellent point. :) I had not considered that "enhances natural attributes = more dorky" aspect.
