rhienellethI had grand ideas for what I was going to get accomplished today.
They did not includemainlining marathoning Avatar: The Last Airbender S2, or going online to catch up on S3 and watch *cough* leaked videos of the as-yet-unaired episodes of S3 that Nick is going to air....who knows when, since my Tivo doesn't even have record of it as a show to season pass.
I haven't done something like this since discovering Farscape and watching all of S3 in one day....a mistake, since S3 is known as the Season of Death. I sobbed for most of the day. Thankfully, Avatar hasn't been as traumatic.
Some thoughts:
~ Azula is a crazy ass bitch. Seriously fucking crazy. I get the impression she is a hugely popular character in fandom, and I am a bit mystified. Sure, she makes a good villain, but...not in the same way that, say, Irina was an awesome villain on Alias. I guess I like my villians with at least a hint of internal conflict. I did like her a little better during "The Beach", when she was jealous of Ty's ability to flirt, and so so terrible at it herslf. Moments of dorkiness actually made her much more sympathetic. And it was massively funny when she starting monologuing after the cute guy kissed her (she just couldn't keep the crazy under wraps any longer, could she?) I think more humanizing moments like that one might make me like her more.
Actually, 'The Beach' was one of my favorite episodes of ever - we got to see the evil foursome acting like regular teenagers, which made all of them more real, more vulnerable. Also, I laughed more times than I think I have for any other episode.
~ I love Zuko, a LOT. Sure, he's emo and all, but hello, he's a teenager from a family that's so dysfunctional, killing each other is an acceptable method to prove oneself! He apparently missed most of the crazy gene from his father, unlike Azula. I'm very interested to see if his mother will ever show up in the present timeline. (Also, I love love love Uncle Iroh. I cried at the end of 'Iroh's Tale'.) Zuko has all the characteristics of my fav villains - internal conflict, moments that make him sympathetic, and also moments of intensity and darkness. From the very first episode, I've believed he'd eventually switch sides, and HA! I was right! It was absolutely hilarious watching him rehearse his speech to Aang to a frog, and his impersonations of Iroh, and especially Azula, cracked me up!
I knew Katara would not easily forgive his betrayal at the end of S2 (oh, Zuko), but I'm guessing he'll eventually prove himself to her - perhaps even to the point where she'll renew her offer to try to heal his scar (although I suppose that was only possible w/the spirit water?) I do wonder what will happen when he sees Mai again, and I REALLY WANT TO KNOW WHAT HE SAID IN THAT LETTER!! Mai does not appear to feel super strongly about the 'cause' of the Fire Nation - I wonder if she would side with Zuko given the chance, or if she will stick with crazy Azula? (Come on, Mai, you love Zuko!!)
Mai to Zuko: You know, if you'd asked me, I'd've gone with you.
Zuko: ...*facepalm*
(Ooooooh, random spec: maybe something to do w/Zuko's Mom will end up bridging that earlier betrayal between him and Katara.)
~ Katara/Aang = loves!
~ What is with Haru's ugly ass mustache? It's terrible and WRONG!
~ What is this I hear of S3 being the last season??!! WTF, PTB??
~ What is this about M. Night of-the-no-good-movies-since-The Sixth Sense doing the live action version(s)? Now I KNOW TPTB hate me!
~ Um, the fight between Jet and Zuko? FUCKING HOT. No, don't ask. It just was. I'm very sad Jet appears to be dead.
There is more, but my mind is now mush after approximately eight hours of Avatar watching. Where is the fic? There's got to be great fic, right? No need to point me towards horrible stuff. Also, I need icons.

Some notes:
- Mai's inevitable betrayal has been just that since like THE MOMENT she was introduced. P.S. I love Mai desperately forever and she is my goth, ninja, cartoon girlfriend except for where she can't be because Zuko would BURNINATE MY ASS for it but omfg Maaaaaiiiii <333
- "Mai to Zuko: You know, if you'd asked me, I'd've gone with you." I wrote a fic about two days ago with a line JUST LIKE THAT IN IT.
- Aang/Katara = Epic OTP 4Eva.
- Haru's lolstache is...exactly that.
- Avatar was always planned as a three season tale. Three books, sixty chapters! (Though this season will have one episode as the finale is a four-parter.) It is SAD because the show is so great, but it is also great in my mind because it is so careful and deliberate and POTENT (as Bryan Konietzko likes to say) that I wouldn't want to see it dragged out.
- I call the movies The Crisis of Infinite Crimes Against the Universe as there are SO MANY POINTS at which it could go HORRIBLY WRONG in SO MANY WAYS.
- And, yes, Jet is confirmed numerous times to be dead, dead, dead as doornail.

Date: 2007-12-31 06:56 am (UTC)~ Mai - yeah, I totally do not get where her loyalty to Azula comes from, anyway. She clearly only joined her cause in the first place because a) she was bored, and b) she would never turn down an opportunity to get close to Zuko again. She loves him despite his many flaws, and I just can't see her picking Azula's side over his. Plus, Azula is a mean, selfish bitch and treats her friends horribly most of the time.
~ WHERE IS THIS FIC?? I am now out of episodes to watch and thus need good fic to read! :) Any recs would be hugley appreciated.
~ Always planned as three seasons? I thought for sure they'd do four, for the four elements. Alas. I'd rather have three awesome seasons than four or five with a couple of bad seasons, I guess.
~ I absolutely cringe at the idea of the live action movies.
~ *sniff* Jet was kinda crazy, but had a habit of being really hot anyway. Especially when he and Zuko were trying to kill one another.

I would say it depends on what you're looking for, but really, I mean the fic is sadly just generally of low quality. THOUGH that could partially be a function of what everyone chooses to write.

A lady after my own heart! As...I love me some Aang/Katara and Mai/Zuko is one of my NUMBER ONE OTPS OF ALL TIME.
Sadly...hmm, how can I put this most succinctly?!
Wait, you were an HP fan right?
Essentially, 80% of Avatar fandom is made up of Harmonians except switch out Harry/Hermione for Zuko/Katara. Fandom party lines include: Katara Is Aang's Mom And Has No Romantic Feelings For Him, Mai Is A Horrible Evil HOR Who Doesn't Deserve Zuko And Is Just Using Him/Could Never Understand Him And He Does Not Really Like Her At All, and If You Do Not See How All Of This Arcane Symbolism That We Made Up Ensures That Zuko/Katara Is Inevitable You Are Dumb And Delusional.
There is almost no gen, there is little Aang/Katara of quality, and, I lie to you not, for my first four months or so in fandom myself, and about half a dozen other people were the only Mai/Zuko shippers I knew of. And I was EVERYWHERE.
