No, REALLY. O. M. G.

WTF do I keep getting bad flashdrives??

TWO corrupt Word docs in recent months, and NOW, my super high tech spreadsheet of agents/queries is corrupt. [many expletives bleeped]

Damn technology.

I'm going to Staples on lunch and buying TWO NEW flashdrives, to which every single freaking document I currently have will be copied, TWICE.

The good news - the excel sheet was mostly recovered, minus the dates on which I queried each agent, as those numbers had become meaningless and random.

Seriously, you do have the worst luck ever with losing and corrupting files :(

Good luck with the new flashdrives!

That's odd. Are you writing/reading the flash drives on the same computer?

Mostly my work computer (a PC), with less time on the home one (a Mac). But these corruptions aren't happening when I've transferred between the two. Last use of drive or files has all been the work PC. So far, it's only MS Word or now Excel files affected.

Probably a dumb question, but do you click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in your system tray before pulling the flash drive out of your PC? I ask because both Word and Excel create bunches of temporary files every time a document is open. If you pull a flash drive out without shutting it down first, it could potentially cause corruption of those kinds of files.

Also, make sure Word and/or Excel is completely shut down before transferring files. But you knew that. :-)

Um....completely shut down...? Hmmm. Maybe THAT I didn't know!

Yep, I do. And I "Eject" the drive on my Mac, which is the same thing. Not a dumb Q at all. I didn't used to, back when I didn't know any better. :) Ironically, I never lost a single file back then.

Good lord, but you have bad luck. What brand of flashdrive are you using? And I realize that CD-RWs are clunkier, but maybe they'd be a safer way to back things up?

Cruzer. Yeah, I am fit to be tied. At least this time the file wasn't entirely lost.

Oh, wow. That SUCKS in all sorts of ways.

Do you have a backup external hard drive that you can use?

No. Well, it's been pointed out I could start using my iPod as one. :)

How is the querying coming?

From: [identity profile] rhienelleth.livejournal.com
Querying has trickled - still getting the occasional response straggling in from those already sent, but I've postponed doing anymore until revisions are done, then it's back in the saddle.

First on the list, of course, will be the agent who read the full and recommended many of the revisions I'm doing.
