So, there's some screwy thing going on now with LJ and Facebook, huh?  And something also about a pingback notification thingy.

The pingback thing doesn't bother me much all by itself, but the FB thing totally does!  My LJ has always been 'anonymous'.  Sure, there are a handful of people I know IRL who know about it and read it. (Hi Becky, Paula, and those of you on my f-list, you know who you are.)

However, when I finally made my FB account a year or two back, every person I never wanted to see again from high school promptly found me, and friended me.  Since I barely use FB, this is sort of okay.  But, I DO NOT WANT the same thing to happen to my LJ.  My LJ is my haven, my place where I can go and say anything about anything, and not have to worry about someone bringing it up the next time we go out to dinner with those friends we haven't seen in six months, you know?  I can be stupid and fangirly about actors and shows, and complain about my mother's inability to use her cell phone, and it's okay.

So, could someone explain to me in a couple of sentences or less what the LJ/FB thing is, and link me to where/how we opt out?  There better be a freaking opt out, or I may just have to bite the bullet and vacate to Deamwidth permanently, despite my permanent account here, and the many *sniffle* fond memories I hold re: LJ.

The FB/LJ thing and the pingbacks are actually unrelated.

If you want to disable the pingbacks - go here.

As for the FB/LJ thing - if you wanted to cross post, you would have to connect the accounts here.

HOWEVER, on the comment screens, there are buttons to cross post your comments and apparently those will work if you are logged in to FB or Twitter in the same browser. If you are using Firefox, you can install this greasemonkey script and it will remove those options. There is also a similar thing for Chrome and maybe Safari but I don't have links handy.

Awesome, thank you so much! The FB thing is what totally freaked me out. Pingbacks are...IDK, other than cluttering up my inbox, I suppose they don't annoy me.

Unless you have given your facebook information to livejournal, you will not be in danger of crossposting/cross-commenting accidentally, ever. The button to cross-post will be grayed out.

Anyone else who does have their facebook and LJ connected could, in theory, cross-post their entries, and their comments to your entries or comments, on facebook.

So the questions are 1, does your LJ name have enough connections to your facebook account name that this could be a problem?

2, does anyone on LJ have your real life information and are they likely to crosspost things?

So to sum up, there's currently no opting out of someone else using the cross-post feature when commenting to you but you won't be accidentally cross-posting unless you give LJ the information to let that function work.

Nope, nobody I know IRL could/would really link my LJ and FB, so looks like I'm safe! Thanks. :D

*sighs*

Just when I was going to start posting to LJ regularly (or at least try), too. Then this comes along and spoils my fun.

I really don't like the idea of having my comments cross-posted. I don't think anyone on my f-list would do that, but talk about something that would drive me up the wall/expose everything I want private. Eesh.
