Avatar Legend of Korra spinoff series
Dec. 9th, 2010 08:38 am HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS, YOU GUYS??
Apparently, news about it has been floating around the internets since as early as May, when Nickelodeon copyrighted the title, with more details emerging at ComicCon this year. And yet I had NO IDEA! My husband, casually web surfing this morning, found reference to it, and passed the info along to me.
Here is a pic that has been released, presumably showing Korra:

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! I'm just so impossibly excited about this! A new Avatar show! My husband was all "Hey, there's a new Avatar coming, apparently." And I shrugged and said something like "Yeah, like we didn't all see THAT coming. The first one made billions." And he was all "No, like Aang Avatar." And I totally freaked out!
Totally taken and paraphrased, with lots of my own commentary added, from Screen Rant:
So, apparently the new series takes place some 70-75 years after the first, and Aang, at least, is dead. I kind of assume everyone from the old series is, which makes me all kinds of sad, but at the same time, apparently Aang's son, Tenzin, who is now the Last Airbender, will be teaching the new Avatar, Korra, airbending. Korra is from the Southern Water Tribe, and already knows the other three bending forms, so we won't have the same "teach the Avatar to be the Avatar" main story arc. Korra is sixteen or seventeen, so the new series will have a more mature feel than the old one, which ALSO MAKES ME VERY EXCITED. If there is one thing I would change about the perfection of the original series, it would be that sometimes is was a little too directed at kids. Well, okay, kids' show on a kid network, but please, if you've seen it, tell me how often you EVER thought while watching Avatar "this is just a kids' show". Yeah, me, neither. But Aang started the series at twelve, and it showed from time to time, especially early on.
I'm ASSUMING that Aang will be guiding Korra from the spirit world, as Roku did for Aang. (YAY!!!! Maybe we'll get a flashback episode at some point, ala, "The Avatar and the Firelord"!)
The new series will be taking place largely in one setting, Republic City, a steampunk-esque metropolis (as technology has advanced in the last seven decades) occupied by members of all four nations, rather reminiscent of Shanghai or Kong Kong, and there will be an anti-bending movement taking place there.
Okay, so if the original characters are all gone, AT LEAST let's hope they give us descendants from them other than just Aang's son, who must be an Uncle-type mentor figure in this one, as he should be in his fifties. Is Korra descended from Sokka and Suki?? Could be! What are Zuko and Mai's grandkids and great-grandkids up to? THESE ARE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS! I hope the show plans on answering them.
Apparently, Dante Basco (Zuko) has been in doing some voice work. A new character? A flashback to Zuko?
The series is set to run in late 2011, so we have about a year before we find out. It's also only been confirmed for 12 episodes right now, so I'm unclear as to whether this is a mini series, or possibly a full on series (that would be so awesome!) Either way, I'm just excited that we get new Avatar! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

Date: 2010-12-09 05:09 pm (UTC)It's very exciting! Bryke have stated that none of the characters from ATLA will be in the series; dunno if that includes SpiritGuide!Aang or not. This hit the fandom like a bomb going off, as you can imagine. Especially angstful are all the Zutarans who've been busily writing fic "fixing" the end of the series who are now pissed off that it's canon that a) Aang and Katara stayed together and b) had at least one child.

Date: 2010-12-09 06:09 pm (UTC)Yeah, cause when the creators of a fantasy/hero's-journey/coming-of-age/mythological tale of grand epic proportions spend three seasons building up a romance and then have it come to glorious dramatic fruition in the final shot of the show, they totally mean that it's just a teenage phase and they'll probably end up with other people.
Heh.

Date: 2010-12-09 08:28 pm (UTC)I'm eager to see the new characters, but out of everything, I think what excited me most was this:
Republic City, a steampunk-esque metropolis (as technology has advanced in the last seven decades) occupied by members of all four nations, rather reminiscent of Shanghai or Kong Kong, and there will be an anti-bending movement taking place there
STEAMPUNK!!!
