The things I read in my youth.

Of all the terrible teen books written by L.J. Smith, my favorite series was not The Vampire Diaries, despite the awesomeness of Stefan and Damon. It was The Secret Circle.

Cassie, Adam, Diana, Nick, Deborah, even Faye, I loved them all. Well, secretly I always wanted Cassie to get with Nick, but hey, that's not a surprise. If this new show is as good as TVD, I will be one happy fangirl.

ETA: Apparently Deborah's not in the TV series. Here's an extended six minute trailer that gives a great overview. 

My thoughts:

~ Gale Harold is going to be an amazing bad guy! I'm so glad they're delving more into the parents' Circle on the show than they did in the books. He is already stealing the show. *shivers*

~ I have a feeling I'll be shipping Nick/Cassie over the standard Adam/Cassie, even though they appear to have made Nick kind of the quiet guy in the corner instead of the guy with an edge of intensity. 

~ I love Faye so far! I love that she feels bad when Cassie doesn't put out the fire, like she expected her to do. I sense a lot of conflict ahead for Faye, as she falls under Charles Mead's influence.

Omg it looks cheesetastic in the same way the vampire diaries trailers looked, so I sincerely hope it'll be awesome on the same levels. I definitely preferred the secret circle to TVD as a novel series, so I am PUMPED for this.

But Night World was my favorite of the LJ Smith oeuvre, and with TSC as a series now... omg, do I ever want someone to adapt that one for TV. COME ON, CW, DON'T LET ME DOWN.

Also, Gale Harold! Holy good casting, Batman!

Well, if TSC is as successful for them as TVD, who knows?? Although, Nightworld would be a little more problematic as a TV show. It was structured differently, featuring two new protagonists in each book, even though previous characters made appearances, I'm not sure how they would make that work as a TV series.

Yeah, I forgot how much I loved Nightworld, too. Those books are on Kindle. I should get them and reread them. According to her website, she has a new Nightworld book coming out in 2011/12.

I think it would need to be adapted, for sure - I'd like to see it as a kind of Heroes type thing, where we start out with maybe the main characters of the first four books or so (except for Dark Angel, which was my least favorite of all the books) - so like, James and Poppy in one strand of the show, Mary-Ann and Ash in another, and so on. I think it could be developed really well as a series if good writers got a hold of it, you know? And it certainly has fodder for more than three seasons, unlike TSC, which god only knows how they'll continue it if it manages to last more than three seasons.

And yeah, that last Night World book has been in the works now since I was 13. It and the last Exiles book (fuck you, Melanie Rawn!) are the two great unresolved parts of my childhood. I'm not holding my breath for it - the date has been pushed back and back and back and back, at one point I heard it was coming out in July of 2010. But here's hoping we see it at some point, eventually? It's like A Dance With Dragons, but worse.

Yeah. I know Melanie Rawn isn't planning on finishing Exiles. I'm pretty sure, anyway. I read something from her that basically alluded to the idea that she stopped writing in the middle of that series due to some serious depression issues, and for awhile thought she'd never be able to write again. She is writing again, obviously, but she's stated she isn't sure she can ever go back and write on the book she was working on when all of those feelings happened. I'm not 100% sure, but it was something like that.

I'm assuming like TVD, TSC as a TV show will develop its own overarching plots. I kind of expect the story of the trilogy to only hold up for about a season, maybe two.

Ooh, I wanna see this show. But I think I want to read the books first. (I could never find the books in my local library or the small bookstore near my hometown. *Sigh*)
