Aug. 3rd, 2004 11:15 amOk, so the new suit at work (which up until now has been a very relaxed and, dare I say, occassionally fun environment), doesn't understand that 90% of the employees here have been here for twenty years, are in their 40's-60's in age range, and are not interested in changing how they do things in anything that could be construed as an extreme manner. In point of fact, the closest to suits and ties that anyone here gets, up to and including the Site Operations Manager, is a shirt and tie on meeting days. Most days it's just the button up shirt. Probably 80% of the guys here some to work in T-shirt and jeans.
But "H", the new ESS&H Manager (yes, my department falls directly under him), has been coming to work in a suit and tie since day one, and has shown no proclivity to change that, even after the other bigwigs explained that we like a more relaxed work environment here. "H" schedules daily 8:30 meetings with my boss and a handful of other key people in the ESS&H dept. to go over the monthly plan. (i.e. what they mean to accomplish this month, and how they mean to go about it.) What, you ask, can they go over at today's meeting that they did not cover at yesterday's? Absolutely nothing. Because gosh, the monthly schedule doesn't change much on a day-to-day basis.
"H" is beginning to show signs of intense dislike toward my direct boss. Why? Not sure, except (we'll call him "A") that "A" is a fun loving, relaxed kind of guy. He gets his job done, but he does like to joke around with the other workers. Whoops. Guess jokes and laughter are not acceptable here at Center anymore. Since I've been hired, I've worked directly for "A" in his office, occassionally stepping out to help one or two others in the department. Today, "A" informed me that "H" would like to see me do a particular job, for which he gave pretty much no instructions. I asked some questions to try and clarify, to which "A" shrugged and said "I'm sure you'll do it wrong anyway, no matter what you do." Great. Just frelling great. Why do we have one of these?
"H" has all the earmarks of the guy who's moving up the ladder, and doesn't care what sort of claw marks he leaves in the backs of the people he climbs over to do it. I hate managers like him.
